HOW TO GET AHEAD IN PUBLISHING WORKSHOPPresented by Marie Clayton
Tuesdays 20th May until 10th June 10h00 through to 12h00 English Book Centre, Valbonne Learn the most effective steps and techniques to get published from a
true insider—a writer and former Commissioning Editor with a major
trade publisher. A series of four 2-hour workshops covering everything
you need to know about publishing.
WORKSHOP 1 – KNOW YOUR MARKET Aiming your material at the right place Covers publishers and what they do; basic categories of fiction and nonfiction; the importance of research and timing; useful books, magazines, and websites.
WORKSHOP 2 – WHO ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE ANYWAY? Understanding the people in the publishing business Covers types of editor and what they do; all about agents and agencies; contacting the right person.
WORKSHOP 3 – PRESENTATION, PRESENTATION How to present your work so it catches the eye of the right person Covers how to jump out of the slush pile; writing a book proposal or synopsis; writing a good query letter; who to approach and what to send; copyright and plagiarism.
WORKSHOP 4 – WHAT NEXT? How to keep on going once you’ve made that start Covers handling the paperwork; what to do when a publisher says yes; the economics of publishing; the pros and cons of self-publishing; other ways of moving forward.
You may have spent months,
maybe years, sweating and swearing over your writing project – or
perhaps it’s still in the planning stage. Why not spend a little time
learning how to maximize your chance of getting that project published?
There is no sure-fire path or magic formula for success, but there are
definite rules to follow. This four-part workshop will give you a
realistic understanding of the publishing business and a wealth of
things you can do to help get your work seen by a wider audience. Among
the topics covered are: overview of the publishing industry; how to
target the right person; effective ways to make contact; how to write
great query letters; how to send your materials, deciphering
rejections, understanding contracts. The information is generally the
same for all types of books, both fiction and nonfiction.
WORKSHOP PRESENTER Marie Clayton was a Commissioning Editor for Hazar Publishing (children’s books, design and architecture books) and Salamander (craft, gardening, cookery American studies and transport books). She then became Editorial Director at Collins and Brown (general craft and needlecraft). She is now an author and freelance editorial project manager. She has more than 18 published books to her credit, the most recent of which include: The Ultimate Sewing Bible (Collins & Brown, 2008), Make Your Own Clothes (Collins & Brown, 2008), The Needlecrafter’s Companion (Collins & Brown, 2007) Images of Elvis (Parragon, 2006), Marilyn Monroe: The Unseen Archives (Parragon, 2005). She also is a regular house writer for Salon Today magazine (trade magazine for the beauty industry) and has contributed many general interest and travel articles to various local magazines in the UK.
