Martin Waddell

Martin Waddell

Martin Waddell has a background in commercial law, small and high technology company investment. He has spent over 20 years helping such businesses be launched. What became clear to Martin early on, was that the personal financial goals of small and new business owners are inextricably linked to the business's themselves. This lead to the development of personal financial advisory services, providing a one-stop-shop for such clients.

The sunshine, the Med and the mountains, not to mention a tax & social security regime beneficial to large families led to Martin choosing to settle his family of six in the Languedoc area. He now provides regulated personal financial services in France as part of the highly respected Spectrum-IFA Group [ This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. All Spectrum related advice is free to clients and business consulting initial meetings are non-chargeable.

If you need advice including mortgages, financial planning, investments, pensions, tax or even family life in France Martin is pleased to help. Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Huw Williams

Huw Williams

A keen hill walker and sailor in the UK, Huw Williams did not realise at first, when offered a job on the Cote d'Azur, that he would be moving to an area so suited to his style of life. Having worked in the hospitality industry and wine trade for 12 years, he made a career change into I.T. which brought him to France in 2000. Huw now runs an I.T. business “Wireless and Web” from home constructing web sites and installing IP networks. “Riviera Rambling was a way to motivate us to walk in different areas rather than be tempted to repeat the same walks” he claims. Well, it seems to have been successful as, even though the site is only 11 months old, it already boasts 40 walks in the 06 department.

John Fitzgerald

John Fitzgerald

Born and brought up in the UK, John went to Australia in his early 20’s, and continued his work as an actor/director/writer and producer in theatre, TV and radio. Some 20 years ago he was bitten by the news bug, and became a journalist and broadcaster, reporting and presenting news on ABC Radio in Australia, He decided to return to London 10 years ago, working with American National Public Radio, and as a correspondent for various international news broadcasters. Eventually, missing the sun, and looking for a new challemge, John and his wife decided the south of France met the criteria. Being Francophiles helped! After having been a visitor for several years, 2 years ago they relocated to the “old village” in Roquebrune Cap Martin, and have been renovating and rebuilding what was originally the village olive mill.

Olivier Hickman

Olivier Hickman

It is Olivier’s mission to communicate the magic and explain the wonderful diversity of terroir-based wines – wines that reflect the unique characteristics of their vineyards in contrast to standardised wines that are manufactured in the winery.

Olivier Hickman is a dual British and French national currently residing in Sablet, Provence, not far from his maternal roots in Orange. Having graduated with first class honours from Cambridge University, Olivier spent ten years working in finance, eventually as a Finance Director for Warner Music. Seeking a career change, Olivier obtained his wine qualifications from the Wine & Sprits Education Trust in 1998 and set up a UK wine importing business, specialising in wines from the Southern Rhône.

In 1999, Olivier commenced a viticultural project in Valréas, Provence, and continues to cultivate and make wines from those vineyards today. Since 2000 Olivier has also been involved in several winemaking projects in Provence and the Languedoc. Having gained significant and broad-ranging experience of all aspects of the wine business, Olivier set up a wine education and wine tours business in 2005, show-casing the top villages of the Southern Rhône appellation.

Stephanie Brown

Stephanie Brown

Stephanie Brown moved with her husband, daughters and dogs from Washington, DC, to the village of Châteauneuf-de-Grasse in 2007.  In Washington, Stephanie was a curator at Hillwood Estate, Museum and Gardens; before that, she received a doctorate in French history from Stanford University.  Her fascination with France and things French goes back to childhood, when her World War II-veteran grandfather used to disappear to Paris every year for a few months and return with wonderful treats in his suitcase.

Carol Hellyer

Carol Hellyer

I’m 50-something and a ‘retired’ Russian Linguist (Civil Service Russian Instructor and Interpreter for an International Language School).  I spent several years working in the United States and still have a house there which my husband (Nigel) and I enjoy for a few months each year.

The rest of the year is spent (very happily!) in the Var where we bought a tiny 12th century barn a couple of years ago.  Thankfully already converted and ready to cram ourselves, our cat and our belongings into.  Very little housework, no gardening and plenty of free time to enjoy the glorious scenery, the walks, music and writing – perfect!

My husband still commutes to the UK on business and I’m working towards my next ‘master-plan’:  accompanying foreign visitors on guided walking tours of the immediate area around our village (Bormes les Mimosas) and further afield to some of the most outstanding and unspoilt scenery in the south of France.  Still in the embryonic stages but watch this space…!

Ian Callen

Ian Callen

Ian Callen and his wife Anna, along with their two children, Joseph and Jasmine, came to live in the South of France on 1st August 2007 after leaving their home city of Bristol, England. They now live in Quinson where they both work at the Olive Tree International School where Ian teaches photography, horticulture, biology and conservation. Ian likes music, English ale, the odd cigarette and detests straight lines.

From England he misses Somerset, the Wiltshire landscapes, British sense of humour and his mum. From France he likes its lack of Heath & Safety and from the South of France he loves the bright light which has turned him into a very good freelance photographer. You can see some of Ian's work in our AMB E-Card section or on his My Flickr website. You can contact Ian through his This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Steve Craddock

Steve Craddock

Steve Craddock, an Australian living at Barwon Heads on the Surfcoast in Australia, travels to the Côte and Provence as often as possible with his wife, Pat. Their daughter, Alison, marketing director for an international yachting firm, lives at La Colle-sur-Loup. Steve’s personal website is in two parts. Firstly there are pages about far-off Barwon Heads — life in a coastal village changing rapidly under tourism pressures; and secondly many pages dealing with Provence, and focussing on the landscape, walking, history, travel, and books about the region. As the original ‘pioneer’ of Mount Arapiles, Australia’s best-known crag, Steve is well-known in rock climbing circles, and he has pursued lifelong interests in sailing, hiking, climbing, and other outdoor activities.

Mike Preston

Mike Preston

Mike has been involved in the travel industry in one way or another since leaving school in the UK. When the grey skies and the gloom of Harold Wilson's government became too depressing, he sailed to Cape Town to begin a new life under the sunny skies of Southern Africa and soon found himself in Rhodesia, in the good old days (his words!) when Ian Smith was talking about the rule of the white man in Rhodesia lasting a thousand years. He claims to have 'grown up' in South Africa, but adds that many who know him would question if he ever grew up at all.

Mike ended up working for a large travel company in Spain and then, despite not being a Francophile, in Sophia Antipolis, where he was richly rewarded with company paid trips all over the world and the variety of working in a truly multinational environment. He recently gave all this up to get on with the better things in life.

Gayle Roberts

Gayle Roberts

Matthew and Gayle Roberts relocated to Nice in June 2006. She was a solicitor and Matthew a QA officer in a pharmaceutical company. They are both from the North of England and are in their early thirties. They set up Nice Pebbles Ltd in late 2006 and then, based upon the strength of the business, expanded to Riviera Pebbles a year later.

They now live in Cros de Cagnes. When not working (a rare occasion) they enjoy cycling along the fabulous new cycle path between Cagnes and Nice, discovering new restaurants and taking their speed boat out on the Mediterranean Sea.

Recently, she was awarded the first annual Jean Nidetch Leader of the Year Award for outstanding leadership. Anne Ager

Anne Ager

Anne Ager’s broad ‘umbrella’ knowledge of the food industry, and of developing food tastes and trends in the marketplace, has proved to be invaluable to a wide variety of food and drink-orientated clients. A professional consultant who can always be relied on for innovation, inspiration, an insatiable enthusiasm and a focused attention to detail.

Anne has advised on advertising and public relations campaigns for producers such as Lea & Perrins, Outspan, Daregal and Bird’s Eye ; spearheaded new product development ideas for companies such as Heinz, Fleury Michon and Mark’s & Spencer; and she has taken an active role in the publicity and marketing of products and product literature for such well known names as Yoplait, Boursin, St. Ivel, Chartreuse and Taittinger.

Her passion for France, and everything French, has lead to her offering clients a perfect entente cordiale role ; acting as a liaison between French and UK food journalists ; assisting Sopexa with their publicity of French foods in the UK, and, similarly, advising Food From Britain on their publicity of British foods within France. In fact she has created a two-way food bridge across the Channel for food and drink clients.
