The Candle Academy (Bougies de Biot)
In our workshops we share our expertise and extensive library of techniques and designs. Through our time, research and development we can teach you the skills that enables you to produce marketable designs and enter the creative and profitable business of Candle making. In our Basic workshop we give you the opportunity to learn, in two hours, the basics of the Art of Candle making. The advanced workshop is for those who are more experienced or even work in the Candle Business and search for new techniques are want to improve their skills to stay creative, what’s essential in the Candle Business. All information that’s necessary to start your own Candle Business will be provided. The advantage of this concept is that you don’t need a lot of space to manufacture Candles. Two manufacturers of Candles can produce roughly 150 Candles per day. There are many ways to sell your Candles! As the Candle market is still growing, this can be the perfect opportunity for you to start your own business. The boutique is open 7 days a week from 10h00 to 13h00 and 15h00 to 19h00.

Julia Child: My Life in France

If, like me until recently, you had never knowingly heard of Julia Child, it will help to understand that she was, so to speak, America’s answer to Elizabeth David.  It was she who, after the second world war, introduced the dishes and techniques of French cooking to, principally, her countrywomen.  I had been aware of, but never read, her encyclopaedic work Mastering the Art of French Cooking, but could not have told you who had written it (or even that it was an American book).  In fact, Julia Child later parted company from Elizabeth David: while David went on to explore the cuisines of Italy and other Mediterranean countries, Child stuck to that of France but developed her teaching skills into pioneering television cookery programmes decades before they came to clog up our TV channels on a daily basis.

 

Sarah's Midnight Anthology

A year ago I introduced readers of this website to an old friend, Sarah Nock, who had written an insightful  –  and surprisingly funny  –  account of what it is like to suffer from Parkinson’s disease.  (My review of Ponderings on Parkinson’s is still on-site.)  Now she has published another book of a quite different kind: an anthology of verse, but one with a difference.
